Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

police clearance

South African citizens may be asked to present a Police Clearance Certificate, a certificate of good conduct confirming their criminal status, for a variety of reasons including for emigration purposes or for working abroad.

If you require a Police Clearance Certificate, you will need to apply in person at your local police station where you will be required to complete an application form. The application form must be accompanied by a complete set of fingerprints (which will be taken at the police station) and a copy of your Identity Document or Passport. Please ensure that you take this document along with you. The fingerprint form must be signed by the official who took your fingerprints. Your full name, surname, date of birth, place of birth and identity number (if available) must also be recorded on the fingerprint form.

South African citizens living outside the Republic may apply at any police station in their country of residence or at the South African Embassy. Fingerprints should be provided on the official fingerprint form of the specific country. Once again, the application form must be accompanied by a complete set of fingerprints and a copy of your Identity Document or Passport.

The issuing of a Police Clearance Certificate is the sole responsibility of the SAPS Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria. If you provide a mobile phone number (currently only for local South African applications), the Criminal Record Centre will send you a text message (SMS) acknowledging that your application has been received together with a reference number that will be allocated to the certificate. You will then be able to determine, by using the reference number provided, when your Police Clearance Certificate has been finalised by accessing the facility available on the SAPS website. Follow the link, “Click here to do an online enquiry”, which appears on the website.

On its completion, the certificate will be mailed to you by post. Individuals abroad are responsible for their own postage. It takes an average of 14 working days from the day that the completed application is received at the Criminal Record Centre until the Police Clearance Certificate is issued.
